 . \n\nAbstract\n\nDebates about caring work range from feminist campaigns
  for kitchenless houses and apartment hotels in the 19th century to contem
 porary demands for feminist housing policy and gender-neutral cities. Priv
 ate or public\, paid or unpaid\, how has caring work evolved\, and what do
 es this labor mean for architecture and urban design?\n\nBiography\n\nDolo
 res Hayden\, Professor of Architecture\, Urbanism\, and American Studies E
 merita at Yale University\, writes about built environments and the politi
 cs of place. For over four decades\, she has pioneered the study of vernac
 ular buildings and urban landscapes to explore questions about gender\, cl
 ass\, and race. Her award-winning books on the contested history of cities
  and suburbs include The Grand Domestic Revolution (MIT Press\, 1981)\;
  Redesigning the American Dream (W.W. Norton\, 1984\, rev. ed. 2002)\; a
 nd Building Suburbia(Pantheon\, 2003). Dolores Hayden is a former preside
 nt of the Urban History Association and a Fellow of the Society of Archite
 ctural Historians. She received her professional degree in architecture at
  the Harvard Graduate School of Design\, and taught at MIT\, UCLA\, and UC
  Berkeley before Yale. Fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation\, Rockef
 eller Foundation\, Radcliffe Institute\, and the Center for Advanced Study
  in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford have supported her research.
