 ng\; you just need to look at \ntheir facial expressions and body language
 . Besides\, an expert teacher \nwill instinctively know how their students
  are feeling and what to do in \nresponse. These attitudes are common with
 in the literature\, but are they \nreally true? In this talk I will descri
 be research exploring the \nemotional context of the classroom. I will foc
 us in particular on the \napplication of the Subtle Stone\, a tangible tec
 hnology designed to \nsupport private\, real-time emotional communication 
 in the classroom. The \napplication of this tool uncovers an emotional com
 munication gap between \nstudents and their teachers\, the complexities of
  students’ emotional \nexperiences during learning\, and finally the unt
 rained ability of \nteachers to respond to students’ emotional experienc
 es. Drawing from the \nlessons learnt from this work I will outline some f
 uture directions for \nHCI research within this space.
