DESCRIPTION:Prof. Philip Moll\nRecent evolutions in the field of Focused I
on Beams are enabling unprecedented control over the shape and functionali
ty of chemically complex materials. Unlike mature systems\, such as Si whi
ch can be readily processed by lithographic means\, novel materials often
occur in the form of small\, inhomogeneous particles which call for maskle
ss fabrication methods. Furthermore\, current trends in magnetic\, topolog
ical and correlated quantum materials evolve around 3D metallic and semi-m
etallic compounds in which physical properties cannot be defined by electr
ostatic gates like silicon. Instead\, their electronic functionality follo
ws their 3D shape – calling for non-planar structuring methods. These ch
allenges are well met by 3D FIB fabrication. I will review ongoing challen
ges in the field of microstructured quantum matter and paint an outlook of
physics\, material science and FIB developments on its path into the futu
 re.
