DESCRIPTION:Prof. Andreas Linninger\nIn the human cortex\, there appears t
o exist a functional coupling between the neurons in the cortical column a
nd its bloodsupply. The dynamic mechanisms in response to neuronal activat
ion triggering increased metabolic oxygen demand and leadingto fast hemody
namic response to meet this demand are not fully understood. There is evid
ence that the cortical blood supplyduring functional hyperemia is managed
by functional blood units (FBU). Each FBU typically consists of a single c
entraldraining vein with a diameter of about 100um\; around it are three t
o five ring arterioles with approximately 40um in diameter. Wehave generat
ed a computational model of an artificially generated three-dimensional re
presentation of a FBU (see Figure). Themorphometrics of our artificially g
enerated FBU closely matches key anatomical properties of the microvascula
ture of thehuman cortex including capillary density\, distribution\, lengt
h\, and angle spectra. We have evaluated the cerebralmicrocirculation with
a morphologically accurate hemodynamic flow model. Results from simulatio
n on the FBU show thedetailed map of the contrast transit times and concen
trations\, blood pressures\, volumetric flow rates\, and velocities.
