CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:AIM: The DOE SC program in Advanced Scientific Computing Resea
rch (ASCR) hereby announces its interest in basic research to explore pote
ntially high-impact approaches in scientific computing and extreme-scale s
cience.\nExtreme-scale science recognizes that disruptive technology chang
es are occurring across science applications\, algorithms\, computer archi
tectures and ecosystems. Recent reports point to emerging trends and advan
ces in high-end computing\, massive datasets\, scientific machine learning
\, artificial intelligence (AI) on increasingly heterogeneous architecture
s\, including neuromorphic and quantum systems. Significant innovation wil
l be required in the development of effective paradigms and approaches for
realizing the full potential of scientific computing from emerging techno
logies. Proposed research should not focus strictly on a specific science
use case\, but rather on creating the body of knowledge and understanding
that will inform future advances in extreme-scale science. Consequently\,
the funding from this FOA is not intended to incrementally extend current
research in the area of the proposed project. It is expected that the prop
osed projects will significantly benefit from the exploration of innovativ
e ideas or from the development of unconventional approaches.\n\nRESEARCH
OPPORTUNITIES\nExploratory Research for Scientific Computing (EXPRESS) opp
ortunities exist for the following research topics:\nA. Federated Scientif
ic Machine Learning\nB. Differentiable Programming\nC. Explainable Artific
ial Intelligence\nD. Parallel Discrete Event Simulation\nE. Quantum Algori
thms and Mathematical Methods\nF. Quantum Computing at the Edge\n\nDEADLIN
E: A pre-application (two pages) is required and must be submitted by May
12\, 2022 5:00 PM ET. Submission Deadline for Applications is June 23\, 20
22 at 11:59 PM ET.\n\nELIGIBILITY: EPFL researchers are eligible to partic
ipate as subawardee or as a prime if they possess skills\, resources and a
bilities that do not exist among potential applicants in the U.S.\n\nHOW T
O APPLY: Get in touch with potential partners in the U.S. if you wish to p
articipate as a partner in a collaborative project. To apply as a prime\,
pre-applications must be submitted electronically through the DOE SC Portf
olio Analysis and Management System (PAMS) website https://pamspublic.scie
nce.energy.gov/ .\n\nFOR FURTHER INFORMATION: DOE anticipates making award
s with a project period of two years. ($200’000 per year). Please refer
