DESCRIPTION:Erich Wimmer (Materials Design)\nCECAM and MARVEL present the
third installment of the Mary Ann Mansigh Conversation series and invite y
ou to meet Erich Wimmer who will be addressing the fascination and industr
ial value of materials modeling.\n\nThe Mary Ann Mansigh Conversation seri
es focuses of non-strictly technical topics of cultural interest for the s
imulation and modelling community. The format reflects the informative and
informal nature of these sessions\, with talks introducing the subject fo
llowed by a conversation between the speakers and the audience.\n\nPractic
al details\n\n	In person participation\n	Room BCH2103\, EPFL (CECAM Headqu
arters)\n	So that we can make sure we have enough space for everyone\, ple
ase register here if you plan to attend in person:\n	https://forms.gle/KMM

ue of materials modeling\n\nErich Wimmer (Materials Design)\nUnderstandin
g the marvelous complexity of nature is a deeply human desire\, and to thi
s end modeling is a uniquely powerful tool. Starting from this view\, this
lecture will revolve around an aspect of high actuality\, namely energy.
Moving from a society burning fossil fuels and thereby destroying our vuln
erable environment to solutions that are sustainable and realistic\, is pe
rhaps one of the biggest technological and societal challenges of the 21st
century. By discussing specific examples including metal alloys and poly
 mers\, batteries\, electronic devices\, and CO2 capture\, this lecture wi
ll show how modeling and simulations are applied in a wide range of length
and time scales\, supporting the path to better and sustainable technolog
ies. With deeply founded theoretical concepts\, highly efficient algorithm
s in sophisticated computer programs\, and unprecedented compute power\, n
ever before had humans such fascinating tools in their hands. Thus\, mater
ials modeling creates industrial value and it satisfies our human desire f
or understanding the processes that form and transform materials around us
.\n\nAbout the speaker\nErich Wimmer is co-founder\, Chief Scientific Off
icer\, and Chairman of the Board of Materials Design. He has initiated maj
or software development programs\, organized industrial consortia\, and le
ads research efforts to create industrial value through computational chem
istry and materials science. Dr. Wimmer is author and co-author of over 13
0 scientific publications and has given numerous lectures world-wide.\n\n
