DESCRIPTION:Christine Musselin\, Sylvain Piron\nThe College of Humanities
and the Laboratory for the History of Science and Technology are pleased t
o invite you to the eight and last session of Pierre Mounier’s monthly s
eminar on Governing Digital Knowledge Infrastructures.\n\nTue. 31 May 2022
 \, 1.30pm-3.30pm CEST\nEPFL\, INN 128 (registration compulsory here)\nOnli
ne (email simon.dumasprimbault@epfl.ch to get the Zoom link)\n\nThe tradit
ional view on the governance of academia is that of a collegial organizati
on. Collegiality would be a form of self-governance striving to reach cons
ensus within a community of peers–a body of scholars sharing a certain e
thos–whose representatives in higher deliberative assemblies are elected
–primi inter pares.\n    Historically\, this ideal could only be rea
lized in very specific\, somewhat paradoxical\, conditions. In the Medieva
l university\, collegial practices were restricted to small “bubbles”
within specific faculties\, under the authority of theology\, and put to t
he service of a highly hierarchical order dedicated to the construction of
the centralized Roman Church. Notably by censoring deviant opinion\, coll
egiality was therefore an important tool for the sustainability of such a
hierarchy. Still\, oblivious of its history\, some academics nowadays mobi
lize the collegial ideal as an argument to resist governance changes.\n
Indeed\, over the past decades\, academia has undergone dramatic cha
nges\, notably due to the New Public Management reforms\, that have largel
y reconfigured its modes of governance. Due to the expansion and complexif
ication of universities\, bureaucratic characteristics embedded in managem
 ent tools—such as performance metrics—and managerial practices—broug
ht about by the professionalization of administration—have started to su
bstitute\, complement\, or merge with collegial practices\, generally resu
lting in an increase in control and hierarchy.\n    At the heart of th
is seminar\, this kind of hybridization of multifarious governance practic
es is salient among knowledge infrastructures in the digital era. Increasi
ngly digital and interconnected on a macro scale\, as well as in relations
hips with other types of institutions\, how do universities—as knowledge
  infrastructures—negotiate multiple\, sometimes exogenous or hostile\, g
overnance practices?\n\nFor this session\, we invite two scholars to discu
ss with us: \n    Christine Musselin is Directrice de recherche CNRS
at the Centre de sociologie des organisations in Sciences Po Paris. She wo
rks on the transformations of Higher Education and research in a comparati
ve perspective (notably France\, Germany\, US)\, more particularly in the
most recent changes in university governance.\n    Sylvain Piron is Di
recteur d’études EHESS at the Centre de recherches historiques. His res
earch focuses on the intellectual history from 12th to 14th century\, and
more particularly on a longue durée history of the medieval roots of cont
emporary economic thought. He is also editorial responsible for the recent
publishing house Vues de l’esprit.\n\nReadings:\n\n	Christine Musselin\
