CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:Aim:  Meta strives to build strong collaboration with experts
in academia to tackle some of the most challenging problems in their Core
Systems. While all proposals are welcome\, Meta is especially interested
in those addressing fundamental challenges that arise in distributed syste
ms operating at a large scale. Besides the general area of distributed sys
tems\, there are three areas that we are particularly interested in partne
ring with academia to solve:\n \n\n	Infrastructure control planes: How ca
n we efficiently manage\, co-locate\, and provide predictable performance
for thousands of services running across a global data center footprint?\n
\n	Service abstractions and efficiency: How can we more effectively def
ine the service abstraction to better virtualize physical infrastructure f
or thousands of interdependent services?\n	 \n	Global service management:
How can we provide service operators better flexibility and stronger guar
antees in managing geo-distributed global services on issues such as depen
 dencies\, SLOs\, load balance\, and service placement?\n\n\nTo foster furt
her innovation in these fundamental distributed system challenges\, and to
deepen our collaboration with academia\, Meta is pleased to invite facult
y to respond to this call for research proposals. Payment will be made to
the proposer's host university as an unrestricted gift.\n\nFunding
$50\,000\n\nEligibility: Applicants must be current full-time facul
ty at an accredited academic institution that awards research degrees to P
hD students. Applicants must be the Principal Investigator on any resultin
