CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:The Swiss Polar Institute (SPI) was created to provide service
s to and promote synergies within the polar community in Switzerland.\n\nW
ith the Exploratory Grants\, SPI supports Swiss-based scientists active in
polar regions (including remote high-altitude regions such as the Andes a
nd the Himalayas) by allowing them to launch short-term new ideas (for exa
mple pilot projects)\, fund additional field work or launch new collaborat
ions with financial support for logistics. To maximise the scientific outp
ut of a project whilst minimising its environmental footprint\, grants can
also be used for the acquisition of polar data and samples through innova
tive methods\, for instance reinforced collaboration between research grou
ps or with other projects\, enhanced cooperation with local partners\, or
the acquisition of remotely sensed data.Collaboration with new teams or ac
ross disciplines are particularly encouraged\, as well as participation in
larger/international activities\; the grants can be used to complement th
e funding of initiatives supported by larger funding schemes (e.g. SNSF\,
EU\, etc.)\n\nIn 2025\, the total budget allocated to SPI Exploratory Gran
ts will be capped at CHF 150\,000.-\n\nThe SPI Exploratory Grants are comp
lementary to the existing Polar Access Fund (specifically focused on early
-career scientists) and SPI Technogrants (focused on technology developmen
ts).\n\nWho can apply:\n \n\n	Established researchers or post-docs (at le
ast 3 years after PhD graduation) based at a Swiss public research institu
tion.\n	Researchers from all fields of research\, also fields considered a
 s “non-typical” for polar sciences (e.g. engineering\, materials\, med
icine\, humanities and social sciences\, etc.)\, are encouraged to apply i
f they have a project to be conducted in a polar context.\n\n\nFunding: ma
ximum CHF 75’000.-. The grants can be used to complement the funding of
initiatives supported by larger funding schemes (e.g. SNSF\, EU\, etc.).\n
 \nEligible costs:\n\n\n	travel costs to scientific stations/infrastructure
in polar regions (including for the performance of technical/maintenance
work)\;\n	shipment of scientific equipment or material\, and samples\;\n	p
urchase of small equipment (in duly justified cases) and consumables\;\n	r
ental of scientific equipment or sensing systems\;\n	acquisition of remote
ly sensed data\;\n	funding towards fieldwork carried out by local partners
\;\n	costs for preliminary analysis/early processing of data/samples direc
tly after fieldwork (max. CHF 15\,000.-)\;\n	offset of carbon emissions\,
if not an option already offered by the institution (see below for more de
tails on the eligibility conditions of carbon compensation).\n\nNon-eligib
le costs:\n\n\n	overhead\;\n	costs relating to salaries of permanent posit
ions\;\n	costs relating to scientific exchange (stay in another lab/resear
ch facility) and the organisation of workshops\;\n	initiatives which are n
ot directly inserted into a research activity (sports\, arts\, adventure\,
  outreach\, …).\n\n\nSubmission process:\n\n\n	Completed online applicat
ion form (contact\, main information and proposal)\n	Attachments to be upl
oaded into the online application form as PDF:\n	\n Letters of support\n
CVs of the applicant and main partners\, incl. publication lists as PDF (
 compulsory – free format\, max 4 pages per person)\n Completed carbon a
 ssessment tool\n	\n	\n\n\nSubmission deadline: 9 October 2025 (12:00 Swiss
time)\n\nFor more information and application\, please have a look at the
call webpage\, the call guidelines\, the online application form and past
grantees.\n\nPlease contact research@epfl.ch for any additional questions
