 ushing the Boundaries of Wireless Networking and Sensing Systems\n\nAbstra
 ct\nWireless networks and sensors have become entrenched in every aspect o
 f our lives\, playing a central role in our homes\, workplaces\, and indus
 tries. With the rise of the Internet of Things and the increasing demand f
 or mobile data\, the world is witnessing an unprecedented boom in the numb
 er of wireless devices leading to significant research challenges. In this
  talk\, I will describe my team’s work to build scalable\, practical\, a
 nd efficient IoT and wireless technologies. I will describe how our work o
 n millimeter wave (mmWave) 5G wireless networks pushes the performance lim
 its of such systems by enabling fast beamforming and dense spatial reuse. 
 I will then discuss how we leverage mmWave signals to enable through-fog h
 igh-resolution imaging for self-driving cars. I will also discuss how we c
 an enable joint communication and sensing in next-generation wireless netw
 orks. Finally\, I will touch on some of our work on enabling communication
  between micro and nano-implants using biomolecular communication.\n \nAb
 out the speaker\nHaitham Hassanieh is an associate professor in the School
  of Communication and Computer Science at EPFL. His research is in the are
 as of wireless networks\, mobile systems\, sensing\, and algorithms. Befor
 e joining EPFL\, he was a professor at the University of Illinois at Urban
 a Champaign (UIUC) and he received his Ph.D. from MIT in 2016. His Ph.D. t
 hesis on the Sparse Fourier Transform won the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Aw
 ard\, the Sprowls best thesis award at MIT\, and TR10 Award for top ten b
 reakthrough technologies in 2012. His research has received best paper awa
 rds at ACM SIGCOMM and ACM MobiSys. He is also the recipient of the NSF Ca
 reer Award\, the Google Faculty Research Award\, and the Alfred Sloan Foun
 dation Fellowship.\n\n****************************************************
 ************\nProf. Alessandro Chiesa\n\nHow to Verify Computations withou
 t Re-Executing Them?\n\nAbstract\nHow to trust the results of computations
  performed by others? Simply re-running a computation may be infeasible (t
 oo expensive) or undesirable (it may involve revealing private inputs to t
 he computation). In this talk I will discuss how cryptographic proofs\, a 
 fundamental tool in computer science\, can be used to check the correctnes
 s of computations *without re-executing them*. This seemingly paradoxical 
 capability has found numerous recent applications in the world of distribu
 ted systems (e.g.\, decentralized finance).\n\nAbout the speaker\nAlessand
 ro Chiesa is a faculty member in computer science at EPFL and UC Berkeley.
  He conducts research in complexity theory\, cryptography\, and security\,
  with a focus on the theoretical foundations and practical implementations
  of cryptographic proofs that are short and easy to verify. He is a co-aut
 hor of several zkSNARK libraries and is a co-inventor of the Zerocash prot
 ocol. He has co-founded Zcash and StarkWare Industries. He received S.B. d
 egrees in Computer Science and in Mathematics\, and a Ph.D. in Computer Sc
 ience from MIT. He is a recipient of a Sloan Research Fellowship (2021)\, 
 an Okawa Foundation Research Grant (2020)\, and Google Faculty Research Aw
 ards (2018 and 2017). He was included in MIT Technology Review's "35 Innov
 ators Under 35" list in 2018.
