DESCRIPTION:Silvia Rossi\, associate professor at the Department of Electr
ical Engineering and Information Technologies\, University of Naples Feder
ico II.\nTalk Abstract: To make the interaction of a robot with human bein
gs socially acceptable\, legible\, and adaptable\, it is of paramount impo
rtance to endow a robot with the ability to model the users’ preferences
\, needs\, and motivations. Creating robotic systems capable of correctly
recognizing\, and consequently\, modeling human behavior and preferences i
s a very critical and challenging task\, especially in the domain of assis
tive and social robotics and when working with vulnerable user populations
. Moreover\, the embodiment condition of a robot requires also considering
the physical characteristics of the interaction\, such as the user prefer
ences regarding the robot’s physical movements in the space (e.g.\, prox
emics\, speed\, and trajectories). A personalized and adaptive interaction
\, differently from pure reactive strategies\, strongly relies on the lear
ning of such a computational model of human behavior and on the integratio
n of these into the decision-making algorithms of the robot. This talk wil
l provide an overview of this problem in the context of a robot interactin
g with a human by focusing on how to obtain meaningful information from hu
man observation and\, consequently\, how to adapt and model the robot's be
havior accordingly. This analysis will be conducted by considering differe
nt levels of interaction\, from the physical level to the more cognitive a
nd social aspects of the interaction. The talk will present examples from
current research projects in the area of socially assistive robotics\, inc
luding assisting people with dementia and children in hospitals.\n\nSpeake
