DESCRIPTION:Professor Lyesse Laloui\nEPFL's Professor Lyesse Laloui to del
iver the 2022 Eshbach Lecture at Northwestern University in Chicago\, Unit
ed States.\n\nAbstract: Among the non-conventional soil consolidation tech
niques\, bio-mineralization has been a central\nfocus of research for the
past decade. At its core\, Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipita
tion (MICP) is a\nmulti-physical phenomenon\, resulting in a natural CaCO3
bio-cement\, capable of improving the mechanical properties\nof geomateri
als. At the confluence of many disciplines\, the technique is also propose
 d as a solution for a diverse\nrange of geotechnical and geo-environmental
applications. To better elucidate the fundamental mechanisms\ngoverning t
he process and thereby enabling better predictability and optimization\, a
holistic understanding of MICP is\nachieved through multiple levels of st
udy\, each with specific focuses and challenges\, namely the microscopic\,
\ngeotechnical laboratory and\, field scale applications. A focus will be
devoted to the multiphysical modelling of the\nchemo-bio-mechanical intera
ctions at the constitutive as well as boundary problem levels.
