DESCRIPTION:Prof. Mattia Gazzola\, Mechanical Science and Engineering Depa
rtment\, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\nAbstract: We introduce a
modeling approach based on assemblies of Cosserat rods for the simulation
\, design and control of complex muscular architectures. Our methods are d
emonstrated in a number of settings\, from CyberOctopuses to biological ro
bots\, showing how costly control computations can be effectively offloade
d to the physics of the body\, as it interacts with its environment.\n\nBi
ography: Mattia Gazzola is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Scienc
e and Engineering Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champ
aign. He joined UIUC in Fall 2016 after a postdoc at Harvard and PhD at ET
H Zurich. His work lies at the interface between numerics\, bio-physics\,
robotics and computing. His studies were awarded with the ETH Medal\, Earl
y and Advanced Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowships\, NSF CAREER\
, and featured on the cover of several scientific journals including Scien
ce\, Nature and PRL. He is the Lead PI and co-director of the center-scale
NSF Expedition "Mind in Vitro -- Computing with Living Neurons".
