DESCRIPTION:Prof. Majed Chergui\n« A voyage through time »\nIn this lec
 ture\, I will discuss the birth of the experimental method that was motiva
 ted\, a millennium ago\, by the need to describe the nature of Light. The 
 then laid-out hallmarks have led to the expansion of Science in Europe sta
 rting at the Renaissance and to the formalisation of the experimental meth
 od by Bacon and Descartes. I will then dwell on the works\, starting at th
 e beginning of the XXth century\, aimed at measuring ever shorter time sca
 les\, in which the science of Light has played a crucial role. I will conc
 lude with some reflexions on the present situation.\n\nBiography\nMajed Ch
 ergui got his BSc at Chelsea College (University of London)\, his PhD from
  Université Paris-Sud (Orsay)\, and his Habilitation from Université Par
 is-Nord in1986. He then was full professor of Physics at the Université d
 e Lausanne between 1993 and 2003\, thereafter professor of Chemistry at th
 e EPFL. In 2016\, he founded the Lausanne Centre for Ultrafast Science (LA
 CUS). In 2021\, he retired from EPFL.\nSome of his honours include: the Ku
 wait Prize for Physics 2009\, the Humboldt Research Award 2010\, APS Earle
  K. Plyler Award 2015\, IXAS Edward Stern Prize for Lifetime Achievements 
 2015\, European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant 2016\, Khwarizmi Int
 ernational Award 2018\, RSC Liversidge Award 2019\, ACS Ahmed Zewail Award
  2021 and ACA Rognlie Award 2023. He is Fellow of several european and nor
 th-american academic Societies.\n
