CATEGORIES:Call for proposal
DESCRIPTION:Call 3 launched with a deadline for applications on 6 February
2023 (17:00 CEST)\nThe challenges faced by humanitarian organizations in
general and by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in part
icular are immense. In 2022\, according to UNHCR\, more than 100 million p
eople were displaced because of conflict and insecurity\, a number not rea
ched since WWII. Extreme climate events\, such as floods\, storms and drou
ghts\, are on the rise\, thereby increasing the vulnerability of people al
ready suffering from conflict1. The COVID19 pandemic further jeopardized t
he hard-fought gains in access to healthcare and poverty reduction of the
past decades.\nThe goal of the Science and Technology for Humanitarian Act
ion Challenges is to support project-based research between EPFL researche
rs\, ETH Zurich researchers\, and the ICRC to develop effective solutions
for a greater impact of humanitarian action.\n\nEligibility and scope\nA H
umanitarian Action Challenge must be a clearly defined research question d
esigned to increase the impact of humanitarian action or to enable humanit
arian actors to address new and emerging challenges\, in line with the cur
rent or future work of the ICRC. The projects must be intended to develop\
 , test\, evaluate\, or implement an innovative product\, service\, or poli
cy\, which involves a technology (as part of the research or the solution)
.\n\nThe main eligibility criteria are:\n\n	The team must consist of at le
ast one main applicant from EPFL\, who holds a PhD\, and at least one part
ner from the ICRC.\n	In addition\, the team is encouraged to have one part
ner from ETH Zurich and at least one partner from a low- or lower-middle-i
ncome country. Institutions from the rest of the ETH Domain (PSI\, WSL\, E
mpa\, and Eawag) are welcome to join as co-applicants\, and other institut
ions as partners.\n	If the main applicant is not a professor or a financia
lly independent senior scientist (MER) or financially independent adjunct
professor (professeur titulaire)\, the application must include a letter o
f commitment from the host professor or the head of unit.\n\nBudget:\n\n\n
Funding is available for 6-month to 24-month projects. The granted amount
s will be between CHF 50’000 and CHF 300’000.\n	Funding covers the pro
ject costs of the EPFL main applicant and of potential co-applicants from
the ETH domain (excluding ETH Zurich\, for which funding must be requested
through the ETH Zurich call for proposals).\n	Applicants (including poten
tial co-applicants) must provide 25% of the requested amount as matching f
unds.\n\nFurther information \n\n\n	HAC Programme webpage here\n	Applicant
must submit their application via the online submission platform\n	For qu
estions\, please contact the Research Office: research@epfl.ch\n
