DESCRIPTION:Simon Burton (Quantinuum)\nIn this talk I'll give an introduct
 ion to topological quantum codes. \nThese are (co-)homology groups of com
 pact tiled manifolds\, where the (co-)homology has coefficients in the fie
 ld with two elements.\nI'll explain how this yields a quantum stabilizer c
 ode\, \nwhich is a subspace of a Hilbert space picked out by an abelian g
 roup of Hermitian operators. The geometry of the tiled Riemann surface is\
 nintimately connected to the properties of the resulting quantum code.\n\n
 About the Speaker:\nHe is a research scientist at Quantinuum\, working in 
 the quantum error correction team. Before that he was a postdoc at Univers
 ity College London\, and the Jagiellonian University in Poland. He obtaine
 d his PhD in theoretical physics at the University of Sydney\, Australia.\
