DESCRIPTION:Prof. José Bico\, PMMH-ESPCI\nAbstract: Drawing a flat map of
the Earth is fundamentally challenging as continents unavoidably end up d
istorted. Reciprocally\, complex natural shapes such as the delicate shap
e of Orchidea petals emanate from differential growth. From an engineering
point of view\, similar shape changes can be obtained when flat patches
embedded with a network of channels are inflated. We will discuss differen
t strategies involving stretchable elastomers or\, conversely\, stiff fab
rics. Can we program the resulting 3D shapes? How robust are such inflated
  structures?\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nBiography: José Bico is ass
ociate professor at ESPCI where he teaches Fluids and Solids Mechanics. He
leads with his colleagues Benoît Roman and Étienne Reyssat the MecaWet
group at the PMMH laboratory. "Table top” experimentalist\, his research
activities range from interfacial hydrodynamics to slender structures Mec
hanics. Very active in science diffusion\, he co-authored with his collea
gues Étienne\, Benoît and Étienne Guyon\, “Hidden wonders”\, MIT Pr
 ess 2021.\n \n\n\n\n\n
