  Salem numbers of degree 4\, 6\, 8\, 12\, 14 and 16.\nThe proofs use resul
 ts on isometries of lattices\, and these have other geometric\napplication
 s : for instance\, to characterize the signatures of knots with a given\nA
 lexander polynomial.
