DESCRIPTION:Prof. Giuseppe Carleo\, Computational Quantum Science Laborato
ry - CQSL\n15h15   Inaugural lecture Prof. Zoë Holmes\n16h05   Inaugu
ral lecture Prof. Giuseppe Carleo\n\nMachine-learning-based approaches\,
routinely adopted in cutting-edge industrial applications\, are being inc
reasingly applied to study fundamental problems in science. Many-body phy
sics is at the forefront of these exciting developments\, given its intri
nsic "big-data" nature. I will present selected applications to the quan
tum realm\, from nuclear to condensed matter\, showing how these approach
es are quickly expanding the domain of the problems that can be accuratel
y explored with numerical simulations.\n\nBiography\nGiuseppe Carleo is a
computational quantum physicist. He earned a Ph.D. from the Internationa
l School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Italy in 2011. He held postdoct
oral positions at the Institut d’Optique in France and ETH Zurich. In 2
018\, he joined the Flatiron Institute in New York City as a Research Sci
entist and Project Leader. Since September 2020 he is an assistant profe
ssor at EPFL\, leading the Computational Quantum Science Laboratory (CQSL
 ).\n
