DESCRIPTION:In its philanthropic work\, the Werner Siemens Foundation (WSS
 )\, based in Zug\,\nsupports the start-up phase of outstanding research an
 d innovation and excellent\nscientists with their exceptional research ide
 as in the life\, natural and technical sciences. The projects must address
  relevant problems or challenges of our time in a knowledge-oriented manne
 r and at the same time have a high potential for application (TRL >3)\, in
 cluding in new fields. The projects are located at universities\, colleges
  and research institutions in Germany\, Austria or Switzerland.\n\nTo mark
  its 100th birthday in 2023\, the Werner Siemens Foundation intends to fun
 d a\nWSS centennial project: a WSS research center on “Technologies for 
 Sustainability”\,\n(«Technologien für eine nachhaltige Ressourcennutzu
 ng») to be located in Germany\,\nAustria or Switzerland\, with a total fi
 nancial volume of 100 million Swiss francs for a\nfunding period of ten ye
 ars.\n\nWho can apply:\nThe call for ideas is initially not addressed to i
 nstitutions\, but to research personalities\,\nwho should\, however\, alre
 ady now present at which—as funding partner and for a\nspatial accommoda
 tion necessary—host institution (university\, college\, research\ninstit
 ution in the DACH region) the WSS research center would be established for
  the\nrealization of the proposed research idea.\n\nWhat is funded:\nFindi
 ngs and technologies from the whole range of natural and engineering\nscie
 nces based on original\, also unconventional and risky ideas of excellent 
 researchers\nthat can contribute in the long term and significantly to a s
 uccessful pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the WS
