DESCRIPTION:Vasily Artemov is a senior scientist in the Radenovic Lab at
École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.\n\nHe graduated with honors
from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 2007 and was award
ed a Ph.D. from the Prokhorov Institute of General Physics of the Russia A
cademy of Sciences in 2010. Vasily is a physical chemist working on the f
undamental properties of water in all its aggregation states. His broad re
search interests include the electrodynamics of water and ice\, dielectric
spectroscopy methods\, nanofluidics\, and electrochemical systems for ene
rgy generation and storage. His first monograph on the electrodynamics of
water and ice was published with Springer last year.\nNo doubt\, water is
the most important yet poorly understood liquid. In this talk\, I will pr
esent the latest knowledge on the atomic-molecular mechanics in water and
ice based on broadband spectroscopic data from direct current to terahertz
.\nI will discuss the details of sub-picosecond dynamics in water.\nI will
show why the concept of a hydrogen-bonded network\, which has been used t
o explain water properties over decades\, can hardly address state-of-the-
art experimental data. A particular reference will be given to the electro
dynamic properties of aqueous interfaces relevant to biology\, nanofluidic
s\, and electrochemical power systems.\nThe perspective of environmentally
-friendly energy storage will be discussed along with the peculiarities of
the surface electrification of water in various chemical\, geometrical\,
 and thermodynamic conditions.\n
