  are intensively used nowadays in the industry as well as in our daily lif
 e. Depending on their required static and dynamic properties\, balancing i
 s often necessary in order to increase their efficiency (reduced vibration
 s\, wear\, fatigue\, noise) or to facilitate their use (simplified control
 \, improved repeatability). While the most common types of balancing (stat
 ic\, force\, moment and dynamic balancing) are well known\, numerous other
  types of balancing exist\, which have not been systematically classified 
 in the literature. We will present a taxonomy of 16 types of balancing ill
 ustrated by elementary 1 DOF mechanisms exhibiting the corresponding dynam
 ic properties. A generic 1 DOF reconfigurable demonstrator will be used to
  practically illustrate the phenomena. The concrete use of these theoretic
 al concepts will then be shown by applying them to the design of a novel 2
  DOF horological oscillator\, for which balancing is essential. \n\nBio:\
 nHubert Schneegans obtained an engineering degree in mechatronics at INSA 
 Strasbourg in 2018 and a master’s degree in image processing and robotic
 s at Telecom Physique Strasbourg on the same year. He was the hired at Ins
 tant-Lab – IGM – EPFL where he worked for three years on flexure-based
  mechanisms dedicated to surgical instruments and horological oscillators.
  In April 2021 he started his PhD under the supervision of Prof. S. Henein
 . His research focuses on the balancing of mechanical horological oscillat
 ors. \n
