DESCRIPTION:Carlo Peruzzo (Geo-Energy Laboratory\, EPFL) \nAbstract \nHy
draulic fractures are stable tensile fractures driven by the injection of
a viscous fluid into a solid. In widespread use since almost 80 years for
the stimulation of hydrocarbon wells\, this technology has evolved and
nowadays finds applications in different industrial activities. For exampl
e\, it is used to store surplus renewable electricity in the form of elast
ic energy\, to create chemically reactive barriers in remediation project
s for\ncontaminated soils and to measure the minimum in-situ principal str
ess in rock formations. While propagating in geomaterials\, hydraulic fr
actures face the presence of heterogeneities at different scales spanning
from the sizes of lithological layers to rock bedding planes. In this tal
k\, the mechanical aspects of the interaction with heterogeneities will b
e addressed. The questions that will be considered are: “when a hydraul
ic fracture can be stopped by a heterogeneity of fracture energy?”\,
“for how long two tough layers can contain the hydraulic fracture propa
gation?” and “how current models of hydraulic fracture propagation co
mpare to experiments?”\n\nBio \nCarlo graduated from University of Padu
a (Italy) with Civil Engineering degree in 2016 focusing on Structural me
chanics. From 2017 to 2018 he was an early-stage researcher for the CISM-
Lab (Internationlal Center of Mechanical Sciences). He has been in one yea
r exchange at the Institute of Continuums  Mechanics in Hannover (German
y). During this period\, he worked on fracture propagation in heterogeneo
us fully-saturated porous media. Then\, he started his PhD in 2018 at th
e GEL (Geo Energy Laboratory) with Prof. Brice Lecampion. His research fo
cuses on the study of the effect of heterogeneities on the propagation of
  hydraulic fractures.
