DESCRIPTION:Prof. David Rand\, University of Warwick\, UK\nAbstract. I wil
l discuss an approach to constructing and validating quantitative dynamica
l models of cellular differentiation inspired by a revised view of develop
mental landscapes based on past results from catastrophe theory and new re
sults about dynamical systems. The theory suggests a new approach to using
single cell expression data to derive quantitative models that can be use
d to predict. I will describe an application to vertebrate trunk developme
nt in which we identify two cell fate decision structures that we believe
will be ubiquitous. Collaborators:  James Briscoe\, Robert Blassberg\, El

z\, Eric Siggia.\n\nDavid started his career as a mathematician making lan
dmark contributions notably in dynamical systems. In the last years he has
made a number of impressive contributions to systems and quantitative bio
logy\, notably on biological oscillators and developmental systems. Notabl
y his recent work on using geometrical principles to reconstruct potential
landscape models for developmental systems should interest many of you:\n
