ESA+ & High Tech Factory: Organizing optimal conditions for spin-off compa
nies\n\nABSTRACT :\nOver the past 20 years universities have become one of
the primary drivers for innovation. The MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnolog
y\, at the University of Twente\, The Netherlands\, is very active in gene
rating and facilitating spin-off companies. In the BIOS research group\, s
everal scientific developments in the field of Lab on a Chip research have
led to formation of startup companies. Examples such as the lithium chip
and Medimate\, the fertility chip and Cellanyzer but also the role of MESA
+ / BIOS as an initial host for companies such as Micronit and Medspray wi
ll be presented. The special circumstances leading to the Twente model for
innovation with an active interaction between startups and academia will
be discussed. Recent initiatives are the establishment of the production f
acility High Tech Factory and the equipment fund High Tech Fund.\n\nAbout
MESA+\n\nMESA+ is one of the largest nanotechnology research institutes in
the world\, delivering competitive and successful high quality research.
It unites scientific disciplines\, and builds fruitful international coope
ration to excel in science and education. MESA+ has created a perfect habi
tat for start-ups in the micro- and nano-industry to become established an
d then mature.\n\nThe institute employs 525 people of whom 275 are PhD can
didates or postdocs. With its NanoLab facilities the institute holds 1250
m2 of cleanroom space and state of the art research equipment. MESA+ has a
n integral turnover of approximately 50 million euros per year of which 60
% is acquired in competition from external sources.\nMESA+ has been the br
eeding place for more than 45 high-tech start-ups to date. A targeted prog
ram for cooperation with small and medium sized enterprises has been speci
fically created for start-ups. MESA+ offers the use of its extensive facil
ities and cleanroom spaces under hospitable conditions. Start-ups and MESA
+ work together intensively to promote the transfer of knowledge.
