DESCRIPTION:Kimberly Remund\nSystems based on spin-1 moments exhibit many
fascinating\nproperties\, as demonstrated by spin nematics [1\,2]\, Fe-bas
ed\nsuperconductors [3]\, and cold atom systems [4]. However\, because spi
n-1\nmoments besides displaying dipoles can also support quadrupoles at\nt
he level of a single site\, they are not properly described by O(3)\nvecto
rs\, even in the classical limit.\n\nIn this talk\, we explore a new appro
ach which correctly describes the\n(semi-)classical physics of spin-1 mome
 nts [5]. This approach\, based on the\nalgebra u(3) [6]\, provides a conv
enient starting point for Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics\nsimulations\
, as well as for analytic theory. We benchmark our method\nby applying it
to the ferroquadrupolar phase of the spin-1 bilinearbiquadratic\nmodel on
the triangular lattice [5]\, reproducing andextending known results [1\,2]
.\n\nThese results open the prospect of exploring dynamical properties of
spin-1\nmagnets which lie outside the spin-wave paradigm\, including spin-
liquid\nphases\, and the dynamics of topological excitations.\n\n[1] H. Ts
