DESCRIPTION:Prof. Philippe Coquet & Dr Nicolas Tiercelin\nThere is an incr
easing need for reconfigurable and deformable antennas and devices for hig
h speed wireless communications and high-resolution sensing systems at mil
limeter waves. “Smart antennas” must have specific functionalities suc
h as frequency agility\, beam-steering\, beam forming and polarization div
ersity. Conventional solutions for reconfigurable antennas are using activ
e components or mechanical switches facing high cost\, high loss\, and com
plexity issues as the operating frequency increases. The objective of the
project is therefore to propose new solutions of reconfigurable antennas b
ased on the mechanical deformation of antennas and devices fabricated on u
ltra soft polymer substrates.\n\nIn this frame we have demonstrated the fe
asibility of low loss antennas at 60 GHz on ultra flexible substrates like
polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS\, Young modulus <5MPa)\, and we are developing
reconfigurable antennas and phase shifters by integrating actuating struc
tures\, such as pneumatic\, microfluidic or magnetic microsystems\, for va
rying their geometric parameters and thus their operating characteristics.
