DESCRIPTION:Dr. Charles Roques-Carmes\nResearch Laboratory of Electronics\
, MIT\nThe seminar will take place in ELA 2 and will be simultaneously br
oadcasted in the main auditorium in Neuchâtel Campus (MC A1 272).\n\nCof
fee and cookies will be served at 13:00 before the seminar\, in front of t
he two auditoriums. \n\n\nAbstract\nNanophotonics has become over the pas
 t decades a paramount technology\, enabling\, among other things\, the des
ign of novel light sources\, detectors\, and devices controlling the polar
ization\, spectral\, and angular distribution of light. A landmark of nano
photonics is the design of nanostructured materials (metasurfaces\, photon
ic crystals\, nanoresonators\, etc.) to tailor the interaction of light wi
th matter\, either by shaping light propagation at the nanoscale\, or by c
ontrolling emission from atoms and molecules. In this talk\, we will show
how one can enhance and tailor radiation from high-energy particles\, such
as free electrons and x-rays\, with engineered nanophotonics structures.
We present a framework to model\, tailor\, enhance\, and even optimize rad
iation from free electrons and other high-energy particles interacting wit
h nanophotonic structures. We then describe the building of a featured exp
erimental setup to record spectrally-resolved light emission from free ele
ctrons interacting with nanophotonic structures. We utilize our methods to
demonstrate nanophotonic enhancement of coherent and incoherent cathodolu
minescence\, in addition to scintillation from x-rays. We will conclude th
is talk by reviewing recent developments in the emerging field of “nanop
hotonic scintillators”\, focusing on structural optimization techniques
 and forward-looking applications. \n\nBiography\nCharles Roques-Carmes is
a postdoctoral associate at the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT
\, working with Prof. Marin Soljačić. He received his PhD in Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 2022. Charles has performed r
esearch and collaborated with groups across MIT\, Harvard University\, ITM
O (Russia)\, the Technion (Israel) and Tel-Aviv University. His research i
 nterests include nanophotonics\, light-matter interactions\, free electron
physics\, x-ray imaging\, and photonic computing. Charles has published h
is research in journals such as Science\, Nature\, Nature Physics\, Nature
Communications\, and Physical Review X. He has given invited talks at sev
eral international conferences\, such as CLEO\, SPIE\, and METANANO. He is
the recipient of several awards\, including appearing on the Forbes 30 un
der 30 Science 2023 list\, the Stanford Science Fellowship 2023\, the Math
works Engineering Fellowship\, the Robert B Guenassia Award\, and is a Car
not Foundation Fellow. Prior to that\, Charles has received Masters of Sci
ence from MIT (2018)\, Ecole Polytechnique in France (2016)\, and a Bachel
or of Science from Ecole Polytechnique (2015).\n\nRelevant publications\nY
