DESCRIPTION:By: Xun Gao - Harvard University\nIC/SB Faculty candidate\n\nA
bstract\nThis talk is motivated by the question: why do we put so much eff
ort and investment into quantum computing? A short answer is that we expec
t quantum advantages for practical problems. To achieve this goal\, it is
essential to reexamine existing experiments and propose new protocols for
future quantum advantage experiments.\n\nIn 2019\, Google published a pape
r in Nature claiming to have achieved quantum computational advantage\, al
so known as quantum supremacy. In this talk\, I will explain how they arri
ved at their claim and its implications. I will also discuss recent theore
tical and numerical developments that challenge this claim and reveal fund
amental limitations in their approach.\n\nDue to these new developments\,
it is imperative to design the next generation of experiments. I will brie
fly mention other potential approaches: efficiently verifiable quantum adv
antage and quantum algorithms on analog devices for practical problems\, i
ncluding machine learning and combinatorial optimization.\n\nBio\nXun Gao
is a postdoc at Harvard (MPHQ fellowship). Xun received his PhD from Tsing
hua University. His work explores the power and applications of near-term
quantum computers\, including quantum machine learning\, quantum optimizat
ion algorithm and simulation of noisy quantum devices.\n\nMore information
