 tract\nUrban traffic system is multiscale in both spatial and temporal dom
 ains. Traffic at each scale has its own behavior and dynamics\, while inte
 racting with traffic at other scales. In this research\, we propose a gene
 ral multiscale modeling and control framework for urban traffic\, motivate
 d by connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). We propose several key conce
 pts for multiscale modeling such as the state consistency between the two 
 scales to establish the stability of the control scheme\, as well as a mod
 el predictive control (MPC) based solution method. We will share some resu
 lts of applying the multiscale control method to the Downtown Seattle netw
 ork\, including an MFD-based perimeter control scheme and some thoughts on
  how it may be integrated into the multiscale framework.\n\nBio\nDr. Xuega
 ng (Jeff) Ban is the William and Marilyn Conner Endowed Professor with the
  Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Wa
 shington. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Automotive Engineering from Tsi
 nghua University\, and his M.S. in Computer Sciences and Ph.D. in Civil En
 gineering (Transportation) from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Hi
 s research interests are in Transportation Network System Modeling and Sim
 ulation\, and Urban Traffic Modeling and Control. His recent work focuses 
 on applying optimization\, control\, and ML/AI methods to the understandin
 g and modeling of emerging technologies/systems in transportation such as 
 CAVs and New Mobility Services. Dr. Ban is an Associate Editor of Transpor
 tation Research Part C\, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation S
 ystems\, and Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems\, and serves on
  the editorial board of Transportation Research Part B. He received the 20
 11 CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF)\, and the New F
 aculty Award from the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) 
 and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) in 201
 2.
