  submitted online (using a pre-proposal template) in the first instance.\n
 	Successful pre-proposals will be invited to submit a full proposal for co
 nsideration.\n\nAim: \nThe Environmental Research and Education Foundation
  (EREF) is a non-profit organisation based in the United States. EREF fund
 s and directs scientific research and educational initiatives for waste ma
 nagement practices to benefit industry participants and the communities th
 ey serve.\nResearch topics must relate to sustainable solid waste manageme
 nt practices and pertain to the following topic areas:\n\n	Climate change 
 impacts on and from solid waste management.\n	Quantifying the circularity 
 of materials.\n	Quantifying the environmental burden of plastic wastes.\n	
 Environmental justice relating to solid waste.\n	Waste minimisation.\n	Rec
 ycling.\n	Waste conversion to energy\, biofuels\, chemicals or other usefu
 l products. This includes\, but is not limited to\, the following technolo
 gies:\n	\n		Waste-to-energy.\n		Anaerobic digestion.\n		Composting.\n		Oth
 er thermal or biological conversion technologies.\n	\n	\n	Strategies to pr
 omote diversion to higher and better uses (eg organics diversion\, market 
 analysis\, optimised material management\, logistics etc).\n	Landfilling.\
 n\nDesirable aspects of the above topics\, in addition to or as part of hy
 pothesis driven applied research\, also include:\n\n\n	Economic or cost/be
 nefit analyses.\n	Feasibility studies for untested technologies or managem
 ent strategies.\n	Life cycle analysis or inventory.\n	Analyses of policies
  relating to the above.\n\nFunding levels vary and grants can be held in a
 ny country.\n\nEligibility Criteria\n\n\n	Academic and non-academic instit
 utions (provided the Principal Investigators (PIs) are qualified to conduc
 t the research)\n	No restrictions on geographic location (any US or non-US
  institutions are eligible to apply).\n	Submissions may include multiple i
 nstitutions\n\nPre-proposal submissions\n\n\n	Limited to two submissions p
 er PI during a particular submission period.\n	PI cannot be listed as a PI
  or Co-PI on other submissions for that particular round\, but may be list
