DESCRIPTION:J. Bradley Chen is area tech lead for Prevention in Google's P
rivacy\, Safety and Security organization. Previously he led Prevention an
d Revenue Engineering efforts at YouTube. Before YouTube\, Dr. Chen starte
d and managed the Native Client project in Google Chrome\, bringing safe n
ative code to millions of users. Chen served on the faculty of Harvard Uni
versity from 1994-1998 and has published widely on the subjects of compute
r systems security\, performance and computer architecture. Dr. Chen has b
achelors and masters degrees from Stanford University and a Ph.D. from Car
negie Mellon University.\nAre internet technologies inherently safe? Are t
hey predisposed to honesty and integrity? Some may have thought so when th
e Internet was new\, but our accumulated experience with issues like ranso
mware\, misinformation and harassment suggests problems that merit more th
oughtful consideration. This talk will share a vision for a safer internet
\, based on excellent privacy\, excellent safety and a balanced approach t
o enforcement and prevention. We will explore the structure of abusive onl
ine behavior\, how pre-existing offline systems use reputation and account
ability to manage abuse\, and how these approaches could apply to online m
edia. Sound implementations of enforcement and prevention can enable a vir
tuous cycle that creates a bias towards honesty and integrity\, making onl
ine media a net positive force for society.\n
