DESCRIPTION:Nicola Casati (PSI)\; Phil Willmott (PSI)\; Federica Bertolott
i (Università degli studi dell'Insubria)\; Corrado Cuocci (Institute of C
rystallography\, National Research Council of Italy)\; Fabia Gozzo (Excels
us)\; Matteo Leoni (Università degli Studi di Trento)\; Antonietta Guagli
ardi (Italian National Research Council)\; Antonio Cervellino (PSI)\; Stev
en Van Petegem (PSI)\; Oksana Zaharko (PSI)\; John Beale (PSI)\; Andrea Te
stino (PSI)\; Antonella Guagliardi (University of Insubria)\; Radovan Cern
y (University of Geneva)\; Nicola Dengo (Università degli Studi di Padova
)\; Marisa Medarde (PSI)\nPowder-diffraction methods have demonstrated an
ever increasing range of applications in materials science\, chemistry\, p
hysics\, life sciences and engineering. Modern synchrotron-radiation metho
ds not only provide data of exceptional quality\, but have allowed researc
hers to perform previously inaccessible experiments. Along with determinin
g the atomic structure and the relative abundance of crystalline phases in
bulk samples\, information on disordered materials\, microstructural feat
ures\, defects and their evolution in response to external stimuli over a
wide range of timescales is now possible.\n\nThe school\, to be held at th
e Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen\, Switzerland\, will give a broad ov
erview of all the modern possibilities using synchrotron radiation\, start
ing with a general theoretical introduction to the various methods and app
lications. Hands-on practicals with selected synchrotron XRPD measurements
and experiments are the central part of the school and will provide the s
tudent with a solid fundamental understanding of these essential and versa
tile experimental techniques. An exhaustive data analysis of the collected
data\, with various approaches and programs\, will complete the course.
