DESCRIPTION:Prof. Janet Gordon Hering\nDate: 25 April 2023\nTime: 18:00 -
 19:00\nIntroduction by President Martin Vetterli\, Dean Claudia R. Binder\
 , Institute Director D. Andrew Barry\, Professor Rizlan Bernier-Latmani\
, lecture by Prof. Janet Gordon Hering. Followed by an Apero.\nPlace: Role
x Learning Center\nZoom link\n\nTitle:\n“Actionable Research for the Sus
tainable Development Goals”\n\nAbstract\nThere are increasing calls for
‘mission oriented’ research that would serve the needs of society more
effectively.  At the same time\, it has long been recognized that the
‘moon shot’ model fails miserably in addressing complex problems that
lack clarity in both their aims and solutions.  An alternative approach i
s provided by actionable research\, which is intended to be useful in info
rming environmental policy and practice.  Fulfilling this intention requi
res research design that incorporates several aspects.  (1) Desired proje
ct outcomes should be explicitly included in project design and planning.
Target outputs that would foster such desired outcomes should be identif
ied and incorporated as goals for the project. (2) Integration and synthes
is should be explicitly identified as necessary activities throughout the
project and as a goal for the project. (3) Milestones that can be linked t
o eventual uptake of project results should be identified and tracked duri
ng the project and also after its completion.  Designing effective action
able research requires serious attention to the needs and interests of pot
ential implementation partners (and ideally direct involvement of their re
presentatives) at formative stages of project development.  Time and reso
urces must also be budgeted for knowledge exchange\, which may benefit fro
m involvement of (non-academic) knowledge brokers.  Equitable acknowledge
ment of contributions made by project participants with varying background
and expertise can help to foster the partnerships needed for effective ac
tionable research.  Contact with non-academic project partners and stakeh
olders can also support early career researchers in identifying alternativ
e career tracks.  Finally\, diversity in project teams should be fostered
  as a source of innovation.\n\n\nAbout the speaker\nAt the end of 2022\, P
rof. Janet Hering retired as Director of the Swiss Federal Institute of Aq
uatic Science & Technology (Eawag) and Professor at the Swiss Federal Inst
itute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ) and Lausanne (EPFL).  Prior to movi
ng to Switzerland in 2007\, Prof. Hering was a faculty member at Caltech a
nd UCLA.  She is a former Associate Editor of Environmental Science & Tec
hnology and former member of the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science.
She is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering\, th
e Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (foreign member)\, and Academia Euro
paea. \nOver her career\, Prof. Hering’s research interests have includ
ed the biogeochemical cycling of trace elements in natural waters\, treatm
ent technologies for the removal of inorganic contaminants from drinking w
ater\, and knowledge exchange at the interface of science with policy and
practice.  She has also been very engaged in promoting diversity in acade
mia\, particularly in supporting women in academic leadership.  She recei
ved a Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering Award from
the IUPAC in 2015.  Prof. Hering was the founding Vice Chair of the ETH W
omen Professors Forum\, serving as Vice Chair from 2012 – 2016 and Chair
  from 2016 – 2020.\n\n\n
