DESCRIPTION:Tian Yang (ECPS - EPFL)\nAbstract:\nStructure buckling is enor
mously sensitive to imperfections\, so that predictions of buckling loads
based on linear stability analysis are usually overestimated. Reconsiderin
g buckling problems within the framework of dynamical system theory\, a ba
sin of attraction is defined for the unbuckled state while all the states
outside the basin boundary will finally evolve into the buckled state. By
analyzing the behavior of one structure under finite-amplitude perturbatio
ns\, we are able to gain insights into its basin of attraction\, then pred
ict its buckling load nondestructively. Relevant research on arc buckling
problems is demonstrated in this presentation\, which will be extended to
shells as the next step.\n\nBiography:\nTian obtained his bachelor and mas
ter degrees in Aeronautics from Beihang University. In 2021\, he joined th
e ECPS lab in EPFL as a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Tobias
Schneider. Currently\, Tian is devoted to studying structure buckling prob
lems with the knowledge of dynamical system.
