link\n\n\nTitle:\nArchitects and Engineers \n\nAbstract\nThe split betwe
en architecture and engineering represents one of the most crucial theoret
ical problems for the built environment. Since the split was officially de
fined in the 18th century\, the relationship between these two professions
has been not easy\, to say the least. In order to be assessed in its own
right terms\, the division between architecture and engineering must be un
derstood within the wider division of labor that is at work in the capital
ist mode of production. My argument is that in order to make architecture
(and engineering)\, not just relevant\, but also effective vis-à-vis the
challenges of the contemporary condition\, these two forms of knowledge mu
st be reunited within an overall project that can find in the polytechnic
curriculum a fertile ground for mutual influence.    \n\n\n\nAbout the s
peaker\nPier Vittorio Aureli teaches at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de
Lausanne (EPFL) where he directs the laboratory ‘Theory and Project of D
omestic Space’. He previously taught at the Architectural Association in
London and Yale School of Architecture. Aureli studied at the Istituto Un
iversitario di Architettura di Venezia IUAV\, at the Berlage Institute in
Rotterdam and obtained his PhD from the Technische Universiteit Delft. He
is the author of many essays and books\, including The Project of Autonomy
(2008)\, The Possibility of an Absolute Architecture (2011)\, Less is Eno
ugh (2013)\, The City as a Project (2014)\, Living and Working (2022) and
the forthcoming Architecture and Abstraction (2023). Together with Martino
Tattara is the co-founder of architectural practice Dogma whose work was
recently feature in the issue 208 of El Croquis. The work of Dogma has bee
n widely published and exhibited in venues such as the Venice Biennale\, M
ilan Triennale and the Design Museum in London. \n
