DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr. Jolanda De Vries\, Radboud University Nijmegen Medic
al Centre/Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences\, Netherlands\nA Lol
a and John Grace Distinguished Lecture in Cancer Research\n\nProfessor Jol
anda de Vries is Chair of the Department of Medical Biosciences and Presid
ent of the Dutch Society of Immunology (DSI/NVVI). She was one of the pion
eers to translate dendritic cell (DC) biology into potential clinical appl
ications. The first clinical phase I/II studies in which patients were vac
cinated with DCs loaded with tumour-specific peptides were initiated in 19
 97. She also developed a novel immuno-monitoring assay that is highly pred
ictive for extended survival after vaccination with DCs. Her primary scien
tific interest continues along the line of DC-immunotherapy and in particu
lar the migration and imaging of DC.\n\nJolanda de Vries did her PhD at th
e Department of Dermatology of University Medical Centre Utrecht from 1991
-1997. In 1997\, she joined the Department of Tumor Immunology\, Radboud U
niversity Nijmegen Medical Centre/Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Scien
ces. By the end of that year\, she was able to provide the first DC-based
vaccine for a melanoma patient\, the first patient receiving DCs in the Ne
therlands\, with a close collaboration with the Departments of Medical Onc
ology and Hematology.  Over the last 8 years\, a clinical vaccination pro
gram in which tumor-associated antigens loaded on DCs to treat melanoma pa
tients\, has been established. Primary scientific interest continues along
the lines of DC-immunotherapy and in particular the migration and imaging
  of DC.\n\n
