DESCRIPTION:Prof. Silvija Gradečak\, Department of Materials Science and
Engineering\, National University of Singapore\nAbstract\nFunctionality of
novel nanomaterials and their impact on society will be ultimately dictat
ed by our ability to precisely control their structural properties\, size
uniformity\, and dopant distribution at the atomic level. Prof. Gradečak
’s overall research strategy is to address these key material challenges
by combining synthesis of freestanding nanoscale objects and their assemb
ly into functional devices for nanoelectronics\, nanophotonics\, and energ
y harvesting and conversion. Her approach is to use a set of experimental
techniques – each carefully selected or developed in her laboratory –
to directly establish processing-structure-property correlation on the nan
oscale and move toward truly deterministic nanoscience.\nIn this presentat
ion\, we will discuss our recent efforts on the implementation of nanomate
rials – including two dimensional (2D) ultrathin films\, one dimensional
  (1D) nanowires/nanotubes\, and zero dimensional (0D) nanocrystals – int
o real-world applications. First\, we will discuss recent initiatives with
in the Applied Materials-NUS Advanced Materials Corporate Lab with a speci
al focus on the wafer-scale integration of 2D materials for the current an
d future semiconductor industry nodes. Furthermore\, we will discuss a new
type of freestanding down-conversion color filters based on colloidal 1D
quantum dots for the next generation of high-resolution displays. Finally\
, we will discuss our efforts to tailor properties of nanomaterials using
 highly focused ion- and electron-beams or a twist.\n \n\n\nBiography\nSil
vija Gradečak is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at NUS\
, where she founded a University-level Center for Electron Microscopy and
Materials Characterization Laboratory. Since 2020\, she is the lead PI and
co-Director of the Applied Materials-NUS Advanced Materials Corporate Lab
. From 2019-2020\, she also served as a Director within the Office of a De
puty President for Research and Technology at NUS. Prof. Gradečak started
her academic career in 2006 at MIT\, Department of Materials Science and
Engineering\, and reached the level of Full Professorship in 2017. She obt
ained her M.S. and PhD in Physics from the University of Zagreb and the Sw
iss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne\, respectively. In 2003\,
she was awarded the Swiss National Science Foundation Fellowship for Prosp
ective Researchers and spent 2 years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at
Harvard University\, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Prof. G
radečak’s is a member of the NUS Graduate School of Integrative Science
s & Engineering and was a PI within the Low Energy Electronics Interdiscip
linary Research Program under the SMART centre of CREATE Singapore. Prof.
Gradečak is a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award\, 3M Innovation Award\, I
naugural 2012 Nano Letters Young Investigator Lectureship\, and MIT Gradua
te Materials Council Outstanding Teaching Award\, among others.\n
