DESCRIPTION:Prof. Symeon Chatzinotas University of Luxembourg    \nAbstr
act: In the last few years\, there is spur of activity around task-oriente
d or semantic approaches towards designing communication systems. This are
a was inspired while attempting to include the semantic and effectiveness
layers of information on top of the traditional technical layer of the Sha
nnon framework. This talk introduces key concepts by distinguishing betwee
n the two main approaches\, namely semantic and task-oriented design. Subs
equently\, we present some recent results on task-oriented compression/sou
rce coding for multi-agent systems which can effectively capture a wide ra
nge of modern cyberphysical systems. We conclude by describing the steps a
nd open research topics that can lead to a holistic design of task-oriente
 d communication systems.\n\nSymeon Chatzinotas (MEng\, MSc\, PhD\, FIEEE)
is currently Full Professor / Chief Scientist I and Head of the research g
roup SIGCOM in the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security\, Reliability and
Trust\, University of Luxembourg. In parallel\, he is an Adjunct Professo
r in the Department of Electronic Systems\, Norwegian University of Scienc
e and Technology and a Collaborating Scholar of the Institute of Informati
cs & Telecommunications\, National Center for Scientific Research “Demok
 ritos”.
