DESCRIPTION:Edo Kussell\, Departments of Biology and Physics\, New York Un
iversity\nBacterial survival in fluctuating environments relies on gene re
gulatory mechanisms that activate and repress specific genes in response t
o environmental cues. By measuring growth of bacteria in a fluctuating env
ironment using microfluidic devices\, we have found that phenotypic memory
coupled with gene regulation in the sugar operons of Escherichia coli i
ncreases long-term growth rates. In this talk\, I will describe the molecu
lar basis of phenotypic memory in the lac operon\, and present results o
n the competitive advantage of different levels of memory in a periodicall
y changing environment. In the context of metabolic fluctuations\, I will
discuss the question of how selection maintains a gene regulatory mechanis
m and acts on gene expression levels to enhance phenotypic memory.
