DESCRIPTION:Prof. Anette (Peko) Hosoi\nABSTRACT :\nIn most professional sp
orts\, every physical attribute of an athlete that can be measured is trac
ked and recorded. There exists an abundance of (relatively) high quality d
 ata — in football\, basketball\, baseball\, cricket\, etc. — which mak
es sports an ideal testing ground for new analyses and algorithms. In this
talk I will describe a few studies that lie at the intersection of sports
and data.  Topics may include: the origin of the increase in home runs i
n Major League Baseball\; the public health impact of allowing fans in Ame
rican football stadiums during the pandemic\; the role of skill and chance
in sports and other activities\; measuring “court sense” i.e. an athl
ete’s decision-making ability in basketball\; and / or the design of opt
imal running shoes.\n\nBIO :\nAnette (Peko) Hosoi is a Neil and Jane Pappa
lardo Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. She received her PhD in
Physics from the University of Chicago and went on to become an NSF Postdo
ctoral Fellow in the MIT Department of Mathematics and at the Courant Inst
itute\, NYU. She is a leader in the study of the hydrodynamics of thin flu
id films and in the nonlinear physical interaction of viscous fluids and d
eformable interfaces. Her work spans multiple disciplines including physic
s\, applied mathematics and biology\, with a focus on optimization of craw
ling gastropods\, swimming microorganisms and soft robotics. Her passion
for sports has led her to create MIT Sports Lab\, a program that is design
ed to build an interconnected community of faculty\, students\, industry p
artners\, alums and athletes who are dedicated to applying their technical
expertise to advance the state-of-the-art in sports.\n\n
