DESCRIPTION:Prof Oscar Quevedo-Teruel\nKTH Royal Institute of Technology\,
Sweden\nThe seminar will take place in ELA 2 and will be simultaneously
broadcasted in Neuchâtel Campus (MC B0 302).\n\nCoffee and cookies will b
e served at 13:00 before the seminar\, in front of the two auditoriums. \
n\n\nAbstract\nGlide symmetries were employed for electromagnetic purposes
during the 60s and 70s. Those works were focused on one-dimensional struc
tures with potential application in low-dispersive leaky wave antennas. Ho
wever\, the development of planar/printed technologies in the 80s and 90s
associated to their low-cost for low-frequency applications\, the studies
of glide symmetries stopped.\nIn the beginning of the 21st century\, with
arrival of metamaterials\, there was a significant development of the unde
rstanding of periodic structures\, and new methods of analysis were introd
uced. This theoretical development\, together with the interest of industr
y in mm-waves\, particularly for communications systems such as 5G/6G\, cr
eated an opportunity to explore the possibilities of glide symmetries\, es
pecially in two-dimensional configurations.\nGlide-symmetric structures ha
ve recently attracted the attention of researchers due to their attractive
properties for practical applications. Among their interesting properties
are low-dispersive response\, enhanced anisotropy\, and wide electromagne
tic bandgaps. In this talk\, O. Quevedo-Teruel will describe the most sign
ificant works in glide symmetries\, including their application for the de
sign of gap-waveguide technology and planar lens antennas with steerable a
ngles of radiation.\n\nBiography\nO. Quevedo-Teruel received his Telecommu
nication Engineering and Ph.D. Degrees from Carlos III University of Madri
 d\, Spain in 2005 and 2010. From 2010-2011\, Dr. Quevedo-Teruel joined the
Department of Theoretical Physics of Condensed Matter at Universidad Auto
noma de Madrid as a research fellow and went on to continue his postdoctor
al research at Queen Mary University of London from 2011-2013.\n\nIn 2014\
, he joined the Division of Electromagnetic Engineering and Fusion Science
in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH Royal
Institute of Technology in Stockholm\, Sweden where he is a Professor and
Director of the Master Programme in Electromagnetics Fusion and Space Eng
ineering. He has been an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Ante
nnas and Propagation from 2018-2022 and Track Editor since 2022. He is als
o the founder and editor-in-chief of the EurAAP journal Reviews of Electro
magnetics since 2020. He was the EurAAP delegate for Sweden\, Norway\, and
Iceland from 2018-2020 and he has been a member of the EurAAP Board of Di
rectors since January 2021. Since January 2022\, he is the vice-chair of E
urAAP. He was a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Antennas and Propagatio
n Society for the period 2019-2021. He is the Chair of the IEEE APS Educat
ional Initiatives Programme since 2020.\n\nHe has made scientific contribu
tions to higher symmetries\, transformation optics\, lens antennas\, metas
urfaces\, and high-impedance surfaces. He is the co-author of more than 13
0 papers in international journals and 200 at international conferences. H
e is an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to glide symmetry based metasurf
 aces and lens antennas.\n
