DESCRIPTION:Prof. Corentin Fivet\nDate: 15 November 2023\nTime: 18:00 –
19:15\nIntroductions by the Dean\, lectures by Prof. Beate Jessel and Pro
 f. Corentin Fivet. Followed by an Apero.\nPlace: SG 1\nZoom link\n\n\nTit
le:\nWaste no more: past and future SXL contributions for the built enviro
nment.\n\nAbstract\nMore and more buildings are being demolished even thou
gh their components are in excellent physical condition. Urban mining and
reusing them to transform the built environment is a circular strategy wit
h unprecedented environmental benefits\, reducing greenhouse gas emissions
\, waste\, and material extraction. While the approach has not yet reached
its full industrial potential\, it redefines designers’ workflows and c
alls for new computational methods and construction processes. In this tal
k\, Corentin Fivet will review recent research outputs and teaching activi
ties from the Structural Xploration Lab\, EPFL\, related to reusing obsole
te pieces in new building structures. Reflecting on the DNA that makes SXL
what it is today\, he will also attempt to characterise future academic o
pportunities\, pitfalls\, and ethical responsibilities for the SXL and the
like\, beyond current foci on material circularity.\n\nAbout the speaker\
nCorentin Fivet is Associate Professor of Architecture and Structural Desi
gn at EPFL in Switzerland\, where he heads the Structural Xploration Lab.
Based in the Smart Living Lab in Fribourg\, his research focuses mainly on
creating design methods to facilitate the reuse of load-bearing elements
in buildings\, contributing to a more sustainable\, circular economy. Befo
re joining EPFL\, Corentin Fivet was a researcher and teacher at MIT\, Bos
ton\, for two years. He holds a PhD from UcLouvain\, Belgium. He is the au
thor of numerous scientific publications\, is regularly invited to give le
ctures in Switzerland and abroad\, and has received several awards for his
  academic work.\n
