DESCRIPTION:Lonneke van der Plas\nTitle: Towards creative systems with li
nguistic modelling.\nAbstract:\nLanguage is predominantly viewed as a mean
s for information exchange in the field of AI and natural language process
ing (NLP). However\, this overlooks the important role language plays as a
vehicle for creative thought. This aspect of cognition is unique to manki
nd\, crucial for innovation\, and currently under-explored in AI.\nThe fie
ld of NLP has mature methods to capture the meaning of words and the way t
hey relate to each other. However\, creative tasks require a high level of
generalisation that allows the system to cut across patterns found: acros
s domains\, time periods\, and perhaps even across different languages. Th
ey are therefore a perfect testbed for measuring the generalisation power
and actual level of intelligence found in current systems.\n\nIn this talk
\, I will first motivate the need to investigate creative systems. After t
hat\, I will showcase two pieces of work. One attempts to model the emerge
nce of new concepts by means of combinations of known concepts in time-sta
mped corpora\, the other pertains to recent work we did on modelling analo
gical thinking\, which is important for creativity.\n\nBio:\nLonneke van d
er Plas is leading the Computation\, Cognition & Language group at the Idi
ap research centre in Martigny. She is also an associate professor in affi
liation with the University of Malta where she has been lecturing in langu
age technology since 2014.  Before that\, she was a junior professor at t
he Institute for Natural Language Processing (IMS)\, University of Stuttga
rt\, where she led a research group in the framework of the SFB 732\, a Ge
rman collaborative research centre at the interface between NLP and lingui
stics. She holds a M.Phil from the University of Cambridge and a PhD from
the University of Groningen. Her research focuses on multilingual approach
es\, and cognitive aspects of NLP.\n\nThe Center for Intelligent Systems a
t EPFL (CIS) is a collaboration among IC\, ENAC\, SB\; SV and STI that bri
ngs together researchers working on different aspects of Intelligent Syste
ms.\n\nCollaboration and networking are crucial in the advancement of rese
arch and are key pillars of the CIS’ activities. We are thrilled to anno
unce a new series of talks: the “CIS Network Seminars”\, where we will
invite experts from our network to share their work.\n\n \nThe CIS semin
ar will take place In hybrid mode: Room INF 328 and by Zoom: https://epfl.
