\nThe rewiring of mitochondrial metabolism serves as an innate immune-ty
pe defense mechanism that restricts the growth of the human parasite Toxop
lasma gondii. We recently reported a previously undescribed structure we t
erm SPOT (structure positive for outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM) that e
merges from the OMM during infection. We propose that Toxoplasma hijacks t
he formation of SPOTs\, a cellular response to OMM import stress\, to prom
ote its growth. Here\, I discuss the fate and function of these peculiar s
 tructures.
