DESCRIPTION:Ricardo A. Fernandes\, Ph.D.\, Group Leader\, CAMS Oxford Inst
itute\, Nuffield Department of Medicine\, University of Oxford (UK)\nWEEKL
Y EPFL BIOE TALKS SERIES\n\nAbstract:\nThe potency of the T cell response
against pathogens or cancer cells is determined by the signalling output f
rom two distinct classes of immune receptors: the T cell receptor and co-r
eceptors\, which include activating and inhibitory checkpoint receptors su
ch as CD28 or PD-1 and CTLA-4\, respectively. Here\, we will provide an up
date on our latest work in targeting T cell receptors and inhibitory recep
tors to modulate T cell responses.\n\nBio:\nDr. Ricardo Fernandes is a Gro
up Leader at the CAMS Oxford Institute/NDM and Nuffield Department of Medi
cine at the University of Oxford. He obtained his PhD at Oxford\, working
with Simon Davis on the mechanism of TCR triggering. Later moved to Stanfo
rd\, where he developed novel bispecific proteins that take advantage of e
ndogenous membrane phosphatases to shut down signalling by surface recepto
rs. The Fernandes' Lab applies protein engineering to decipher functional
and structural correlates of immune receptor signalling and identify new t
herapeutic approaches to modulate T cell function in autoimmune and cancer
settings.\n\n\nZoom link (with one-time registration for the whole series
 ) for attending remotely: https://go.epfl.ch/EPFLBioETalks\n\n\nInstructio
ns for 1st-year Ph.D. students who are under EDBB’s mandatory seminar at
tendance rule:\nIF you are not attending in-person in the room\, please ma
ke sure to\n\n	send D. Reinhard a note before noon on seminar day\, inform
ing that you plan to attend the talk online\, and\n	be signed in on Zoom w
ith a recognizable user name (not a pseudonym making it difficult or impos
sible to be identified).\n\nStudents attending the seminar in-person shoul
d collect a confirmation signature after the talk - please print your own
signature sheet beforehand (71 kB pdf available for download here).
