DESCRIPTION:Dr. Peter Smith\, Northwestern University\n\nAbstract\nDevelop
ing catalysis platforms for efficient chemical transformations requires ei
ther building upon useful empirical evidence or studying unexplored design
spaces. Importantly\, both approaches benefit from merging different rese
arch fields to solve new challenges. Here\, I will discuss how materials d
esign parameters can be applied to molecular electrocatalysts in the form
of porous supramolecules. Then\, I will describe how nanotechnology can tr
ansform materials synthesis by shrinking the volume of reactors. This can
yield thousands to millions of catalyst candidates on a single chip for te
sting\, and varied molecular sensors prove to be critical in rapidly testi
ng and identifying top performing materials catalysts.\n\nBio\nPeter Smith
is a Postdoctoral researcher at Northwestern University working with Prof
. Chad Mirkin in the Department of Chemistry and the International Institu
te for Nanotechnology. He completed his graduate studies in Chemistry at t
he University of California\, Berkeley with Prof. Chris Chang where he dev
eloped supramolecular porphyrin catalysts and redox mediators for electroc
hemical small molecule conversion. His current research merges nanofabrica
tion and molecular sensing to synthesize and screen thousands to millions
of new catalysts per experiment\, helping to accelerate our materials disc
overy workflow.\n\nFree Event - Limited seats\, please register to attend:
