DESCRIPTION:Prof. Carlo Alberto Nucci\,\nDEI (Department of Electrical\, E
lectronic and Information Engineering)\, University of Bologna\, Italy\nTh
e seminar will take place in ELA 2 and will be simultaneously broadcasted
in Neuchâtel Campus (MC A1 272).\n\nCoffee and cookies will be served a
t 13:00 before the seminar\, in front of the two auditoriums. \n\nAbstrac
t\nThe role of smart cities in advancing climate neutrality is expected to
significantly grow in the years ahead. While comprising merely 4% of the
EU's land area\, cities accommodate 75% of the EU population. Worldwide\,
urban areas contribute to over 70% of CO2 emissions and surpass 65% of tot
al energy consumption. Cities serve as a testing ground for decarbonizatio
 n strategies\, encompassing energy\, transportation\, buildings\, as well
as industry and agriculture. Their concentrated infrastructure and usage o
ffer substantial potential for intersectoral integration in the pursuit of
a comprehensive smart grid paradigm. The EU Mission on Climate Neutral an
d Smart City seeks to merge climate neutrality with the implementation of
the Smart City model\, and this seminar outlines some key aspects of the M
ission.\n\nThe increasing electrification of various sectors\, driven by t
he expanding adoption of renewable energy sources\, emphasizes the growing
significance of the electricity system\, particularly the smart grid\, in
this context. However\, the utilization of renewable sources remains cons
trained\, posing a challenge that requires significant and coordinated eff
orts\, as elaborated in this discourse.\n\nThe concluding section of this
seminar delves into Renewable Energy Communities (REC)\, as outlined in th
e RED II and IEM European directives. These communities\, composed of citi
zens' associations\, commercial entities\, or companies\, focus on generat
ing and sharing electricity from renewable sources. They have the potentia
l to make substantial contributions to energy transition in multiple count
ries and serve as the nucleus for smart districts capable of evolving into
Positive Energy Districts. The presentation includes insights from the GE
CO-Green Energy Community project\, accomplished active in the Pilastro an
d Roveri districts of Bologna\, Italy. Implemented by a consortium includi
ng the Energy and Sustainable Development Agency (AESS)\, the National Age
ncy for New Technologies\, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (EN
EA)\, and the University of Bologna (UniBo)\, the project sheds light on b
oth the possibilities and challenges that still need to be addressed for t
he widespread adoption of renewable energy communities.\n\nBio\nCarlo Albe
rto Nucci is a Full Professor and Head of the Power Systems Laboratory of
the Department of Electrical\, Electronic and Information Engineering “G
uglielmo Marconi”\, University of Bologna. Responsible of several resear
ch projects financed by the Italian Ministry of Research and by the Italia
n Science Foundation (C.N.R.)\, by European Commission and of several rese
arch contracts financed by Italian and foreign companies and universities
regarding restoration processes after blackouts\, lightning interaction wi
th power distribution systems\, lightning protection of wind turbines\, EM
C in power systems\, management of distribution networks with high penetra
tion of distributed resources and methods/devices for accomplishing fault
location in distribution networks\, Phasor Measurement Units\, State Estim
ation of power distribution networks\, Smart City and Energy Communities.
Prof. Nucci is a Fellow of the IEEE\, of the International Council on Larg
e Electric Systems (CIGRE)\, of which he is also an Honorary member\, and
of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering\, CSEE. He has received s
ome best paper/technical international awards\, including the CIGRE Techni
cal Committee Award and the ICLP Golde Award. Member of the IEEE Fellow Co
mmittee for the years 2022 and 2023. Has served as panel chair of the 2022
Call for Exploratory Research Projects under the MIT Portugal Program. Pr
of. Nucci has also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Electric Power Systems
Research journal (Elsevier) from 2010 to 2021. He is presently serving as
the Italian Representative in the Horizon Europe Mission “Climate-Neutr
al and Smart cities”. He is also serving as the Chair of the Internation
al Conference on Lightning Protection\, ICLP and as co-chair of the Intern
ational Conference on Power Systems Transients\, IPST. Prof. Nucci is Doct
or Honoris Causa of the University Politehnica of Bucharest\, a member of
the Academy of Science of the Institute of Bologna and a member of the Ist
ituto Lombardo - Science Academy of Milan. He is also distinguished invite
d Professor at Tsinghua University\, Beijing (2023-2026). Invited Keynote
plenary speaker and lecturer at some 40 international conferences. Total n
 umber of citations (Scopus: 7372\, H index: 43. Google Scholar: 12866\, H
 index: 55) – November 2023.\n
