DESCRIPTION:Prof. Edouard Davin\nDr. Peter Bebi\n\n\nNature-based solution
s for climate change mitigation and adaptation\nPresented by Prof. Edouard
Davin\, Professor of climate scenarios for sustainable development at the
Wyss Academy for Nature of the University of Bern\n\nAs urgent actions ar
e needed to curb climate change and biodiversity decline\, Nature-Based So
lutions (NbS) could play an essential role to help address both issues syn
ergistically. However\, NbS remain controversial because of uncertainties
surrounding their effectiveness and the risks involved in their implementa
tion. Embracing a broader portfolio of NbS beyond the ones focusing most o
f the attention and prioritising those providing co-benefits on several su
stainability dimensions could minimise risks while delivering a much neede
d contribution to climate change adaptation and mitigation.\n \n\n\nManag
ement\, climate adaptation and climate mitigation in mountain forests of t
he Alps\nPresented by Dr Peter Bebi\, Head of the Mountain Ecosystem group
and CERC (Climate Change\, Extremes and Natural Hazards in Alpine Regions
Research Centre) at the WSL-Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF
\n\nMountain forests in the Alps are strongly characterised by human land-
use history and natural disturbances. These forests fulfil important ecosy
stem services\, e.g. as protection against natural hazards. With climate c
hange\, we expect shifts of upper treeline\, but also a further increase o
f natural disturbances such as fire\, windthrow or bark beetle outbreaks.
In this contribution\, I discuss current trends and challenges related to
the management of mountain forests under climate change and how aspects of
climate adaptation and climate mitigation may be optimised.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
