DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kelvin Anggara\, Max Planck Institute for Solid State Rese
arch\, Germany\nStructure dictates properties” is a key concept in chemi
stry – emphasizing the importance of molecular structures in understandi
ng chemical phenomena. Yet capturing diverse molecular structures in biolo
gy and chemical catalysis remains challenging today due to ensemble-averag
ing in current analytical methods. Ensemble-averaged measurements on struc
turally diverse molecules result in the loss of structural details at the
single-molecule level. Here we bypass this problem by imaging molecules on
e-at-a-time using scanning probe microscopy. Our approach unveils\, for th
e first time\, structures of biomolecules decorated with glycans (a.k.a ca
rbohydrates) at the nanoscale\, offering a new means to probe molecular st
 ructures at single-molecule level.
